In an effort to bring knowledge and information to UConn Nation, the UConn Alumni Climate Change Series brings UConn's world-renowned faculty and alumni together to discuss numerous topics facing the global population surrounding climate change.

The decarbonization of the United States’ energy system to fight climate change is crucial. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bilateral Infrastructure Law provide considerable resources to help the United States to transition to renewable energy in the coming decade. Investments are being made to incubate innovative technologies and to cultivate the next generation of scientists and engineers to create the knowledge necessary to create pathways towards a clean energy future.

While the focus on STEM is necessary, it is not sufficient. Creating a clean energy future relies on social acceptance, a multi-dimensional concept that spans political acceptance, market acceptance, and community acceptance.

This interdisciplinary panel of social scientists will explain the concept of social acceptance and share several examples from their own research that illustrate the challenges and opportunities that are emerging as the US transitions to a low carbon economy.

Case studies include the political repercussions of land-based wind turbine development in Minnesota and Texas, and opposition from coastal communities to hosting landfall cables, sub-stations and transmission lines associated with the burgeoning offshore wind industry.
