UConn School of Law will host a roundtable on human rights in the information and communication technology sector. Michael Callahan LAW '95, Michael Samway and Professor Molly Land will engage in an open discussion on the global trends in government regulation of the internet, including issues arising in the context of data protection, data privacy, and state censorship. Professor Kiel Brennan-Marquez will moderate.
Michael Callahan ('95) was recently General Counsel of LinkedIn, and of Yahoo! before that, and is Professor of the Practice of Law and Executive Director of the Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford Law School.
Michael Samway is President of the Business and Human Rights Group, a consultancy focusing on business and human rights in the technology sector, and formerly vice president and deputy general counsel at Yahoo!
Molly Land is a professor of law and Human Rights at UConn, and a scholar on the intersection of human rights, science, and technology.
Kiel Brennan-Marquez is a professor of law, and a scholar on the impact of the internet and digital technologies on legal systems.
The panel will be addressing such issues as:
Fake news, threats to digital privacy and artificial intelligence;
The ways in which new technologies are both instruments of social progress and of oppression;
Career paths in the intersection of law, the internet and human rights.
